CANADA ~ Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump - UNESCO ~

... So beautiful designed postcard... I really like it a lot♥... this site is one of the world's largest, oldest, and best-preserved buffalo jumps in the world... a place rich in Native American culture and has powerful spiritual ties to its people... the name of the site come from a Blackfoot legend, whereby a young Blackfoot wanted to watch the bison plunge off the cliff from below, but was buried underneath the falling bison... he was later found dead under the pile of carcasses, where he had his head smashed in... today, layers of bison bones buried at the cliff’s base are representative of this ancient custom in some places 11 metres deep... with great "Post and Go" stamps...Thanks a lot Glenn!! ✿◕ ‿ ◕✿ ➜Gem's World Postcards

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is located in Alberta, Canada -- where the foothills of the Rocky Mountains begin to rise from the prairie, 18 km northwest of Fort Macleod.

The Jump bears witness to a method of hunting practiced by native people of the North American plains for nearly 6,000 years.  The Blackfoot Native Indians used the cliffs located here for killing the Buffalo they depended on for their survival. This was done by herding and stampeding Buffalo over the cliffs, hence the name "Head Smashed In".

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump became UNESCO WHS in 1981.
