SRI LANKA ~ Traditional Masks ~

... Beautiful colorful wood-carved masks... these "Raksha Masks" are used in various dramatic rituals, festivals and cultural dances... they are carved by craftsmen according to patterns approved by custom and tradition... often seen at the main entrance of Sinhalese homes, to ward off evil influences and protect the householders, and date back to pre-Buddhist time In Sri Lanka... Vesmuhunu (Devil Masks) of Sri Lanka.

Raksha means “demon” and they are painted in vibrant colors, with bulging eyes and protruding tongues and they depict various types of demons.

Raksha masks (Ves Muhunu) are used in traditional Kolam folk dance, each mask represents a specific character.

This postcard shows the "Naga Mask" or snake Demon, an elaborate and impressive cobra mask and the "Mayura Raksha" or the peacock demon that brings peace, harmony and wealth.
